Sheriff Deputy William R. Hunter, 26, Butte County Sheriff's Office, born
November 10, 1974, was killed in the line of duty on July 26, 2001. Hunter served
his community as a member of the Designated Area Deputy Team, focused on
preventing rural and agricultural crimes. He then earned his K-9 unit designation
and was about to begin patrolling with his dog, Ilo. Hunter took extreme pride in
his job as a peace officer. He truly made a difference in his community and has a
