SGT & Deputy Chief Russell E. Slater, 82, U.S. Army, Kentwood P.D., born October 25, 1930, passed away on October 15, 2013. Slater was a Supply Sergeant in the
Korean War, overseeing logistics and ensuring our troops had what they needed. Next, he became a Deputy with Kent County S.O. Slater before becoming one of the first officers for the police department of the newly formed city of Kentwood, where he served 26 years and became Deputy Chief and was a Volunteer Firefighter for 40 years.
