SSgt Jeffrey R. Starling, 27, U.S.M.C., born in Florida May 27, 1972, passed away in
a helicopter crash on December 9, 1999. Starling was a Field Radio Operator with
1st Force Recon Company. While on a training exercise, the helicopter his team
was riding in got tangled in the safety netting of the ship they were landing on and
fell into the sea. Starling and six fellow Marines perished in the crash. There is now
a Special Operations Training Group Building and an award for "Communicator of
