PO1 John Waters Jr., 94, U.S. Navy, born May 26, 1927, passed away on December
29, 2021. Waters was a Sonarman on the USS Arikara (AT-90) in WWII. While in the
Pacific, he helped keep the USS Evans (DD-552) afloat after kamikaze attacks. He
was then aboard USS Barton (DD-722) in Operation Crossroads. His ship was the
closest to the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests and experienced radiation poisoning, which
caused many ailments later in life. For his service, he earned a Navy
Commendation with "V" device. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate! Til
