LCpl Anthony E. Butterfield, 19, U.S.M.C., born in California May 4, 1987, was killed
in action on July 29, 2006. Butterfield served with the 3rd Light Armored
Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, and deployed for Operation Iraqi
Freedom. While guarding a checkpoint, a propane truck rapidly approached.
Butterfield was able to take out the driver, who then detonated the explosive
outside of the compound. If not for his quick actions, many more Marines would
have perished. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Semper Fi, Marine! Til
Valhalla, Brother!
