Cpl John H. Eller Jr., 63, U.S.M.C., born October 5, 1924, passed away from cancer on October 30, 1987. In WWII, Eller was a Rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, his unit landed on Beach Green 1 and eliminated Japanese forces. Eller then helped set up a position to protect his company as they continued the assault. From shore, he watched as six Marines he defended raised the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi in one of the most iconic events of WWII. For his service, Eller earned a Purple Heart. Semper Fi, Marine!
