SSG Paul G. Smith, 43, U.S. Army, born in Illinois July 9, 1965, was killed in action
on June 19, 2009. Smith was a Cavalry Scout with 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry
Regiment, and deployed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring
Freedom. He was manning the turret of his Humvee on a mission he volunteered
for when his vehicle was struck by an IED. Smith and one of his brothers-in-arms
did not survive the explosion. He earned a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and was
posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant. Rest easy, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
