SGT Richard M. Sandberg, 19, U.S. Army Air Corps, born September 2, 1925, was declared missing in action on April 5, 1945. Sandberg served as a B-24 Waist Gunner with 328th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bombardment Group (Heavy), 8th Air Force in WWII. While on a mission to bomb a train yard used to move German troops and supplies, his aircraft, the "Jolly Roger," was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Sandberg and his eight crewmates ditched the aircraft over the North Sea and were never seen again. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Fly high, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
