March 1, 1947 - April 8, 1968

SGT John F. Plunkard, 21, U.S. Army, born March 1, 1947, was killed in action on April 8, 1968. Plunkard was a Fire Team Leader with 1st Battalion, 505th Infantry Regiment in Vietnam. While on a combat operation, his unit came under fire. Plunkard ran toward the NVA position and drew fire away from his squad. Though he was killed in the assault, he took out a gun emplacement, allowing his men to overrun and defeat the enemy. For his service, he earned two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars (one with "V" device), and the Silver Star. Rest easy, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
