S2 Hiram A. Newcomb, 18, U.S. Navy, born August 26, 1924, was lost at sea on November 30, 1942. Newcomb served aboard the USS Northampton (CA-26) in WWII. During the Battle of Tassafaronga, the ship was in a fierce Naval battle near Guadalcanal when it was struck by two enemy torpedoes. The crew desperately tried to keep the vessel afloat, but the damage was too great and everyone was ordered to abandon ship. Newcomb and 49 of his brothers-in-arms were never seen again. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Fair winds and following seas, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
