September 30, 1926 - July 30, 1945

S1c (FCO) William G. Stier, 18, U.S. Navy, born September 30, 1926, was killed in action on July 30, 1945. Stier was a Fire Controlman Operator on the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) in WWII. While returning from delivering parts of the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, the cruiser was struck by Japanese torpedoes. In the dead of night, the 1,196-man crew was forced to abandon ship into shark-infested waters. Stier and 878 of his fellow Sailors were never seen again. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Fair winds and following seas, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
