In Memory OfS1c Charles E. Mays

January 7, 1923 - June 19, 1943

S1c Charles E. Mays, 20, U.S. Navy, born January 7, 1923, was lost at sea on June 19, 1943. Mays was a Naval Guard aboard the SS Henry Knox in WWII. While on a mission to resupply our Soviet allies, a Japanese submarine hit the ship with two torpedoes. The first struck a munitions hold, causing a large explosion, and the other hit dead center, breaking the vessel in two. Over half of the men made it to lifeboats, but Mays and 25 crewmen and Naval Guards were lost. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate! Til Valhalla, Brother!
