In Memory OfPVT Maurice E. McFadden

PVT Maurice E. McFadden, 19, U.S.M.C., born November 2, 1925, was killed in action on February 22, 1945. McFadden was a Rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment in WWII. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, his unit was clearing Japanese cave and tunnel positions when a firefight erupted. Amidst the chaos, McFadden was hit by an enemy mortar. Though he did not survive his wounds, his efforts helped lead his unit to raise our flag atop Mount Suribachi less than 24 hours after he fell. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart.
