PVT Joseph L. Duenne, 26, U.S.M.C., born in Ohio November 1, 1918, was killed in
action on March 5, 1945. Duenne served with 5th Marine Division, and deployed to
the Pacific Theater in WWII as part of the Fleet Marine Force. He was part of the
Division's first combat experience in the Battle of Iwo Jima during Operation
Detachment. Shortly after his landing craft reached the shore, Duenne was hit by
enemy fire as his unit charged toward a Japanese position. For his service, he was
posthumously awarded a Purple Heart. Semper Fi, Marine! Til Valhalla, Brother!
