PVT Fred P. Dayberry, 19, U.S. Army, born May 20, 1925, was killed in action on September 20, 1944. Dayberry was an Infantryman with 338th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division in WWII. During the Allied Gothic Line Offensive, his unit was preparing to capture Hill 646 when they were pinned down. Dayberry and several of his squadmates died in the attack, but their sacrifice inspired his Company to brave German machine guns, artillery, and mortars, take out the Nazis, and capture that hill. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart. Rest easy, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
