EW2 Michael A. Yanik, 49, U.S. Navy, born March 14, 1970, lost the battle within on March 26, 2019. Yanik served as an Electronic Warfare Technician aboard the USS Iowa (BB-61), helping to analyze radar signals and detect enemy aircraft and missiles. While conducting gunnery drills off the coast of Puerto Rico, one of the main turrets suddenly exploded. For hours, Yanik worked tirelessly to extinguish the inferno which quickly spread across the deck and saved the lives of countless crewmembers. Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate!
