In Memory OfENS Charles W. Wattenbarger

September 17, 1915 - July 1, 1944

ENS Charles W. Wattenbarger, 28, U.S. Navy, born in Tennessee September 17, 1915, was lost at sea on July 1, 1944. Wattenbarger was a PV-1 Ventura Pilot with Bombing Squadron 132 in the North African Theater of WWII. While conducting a live- fire gunnery practice training mission, the medium bomber suddenly lost altitude and crashed into the sea 20 miles off the coast of French Morocco. The aircraft sank to the bottom of the Atlantic, and Wattenbarger and his four-man crew were never recovered. Fair winds and following seas, Airman! Til Valhalla, Brother!
