Deputy Sheriff William S. Thompson, 55, Claiborne County Sheriff's Office, born in Tennessee July 20, 1876, passed away from line of duty-related injuries of duty on August 11, 1931. Thompson served Claiborne County at the height of prohibition. After receiving word that an alcohol still was being operated near the Virginia border, he and a team of deputies conducted a raid. While approaching the barn where the still was kept, the bootlegger opened fire. Thompson was mortally wounded in the exchange. Rest easy; We have the watch now! Til Valhalla, Brother!
