Cpl Robert A. Klinger, 27, U.S.M.C., born in Kentucky October 14, 1917, was killed in action February 20, 1945. Klinger served with 5th Tank Battalion, 5th Marine Division and deployed to the Pacific Theater of WWII. During the Battle of Iwo Jima, his unit was sent to capture the Volcano Islands. The first night of the engagement, Klinger's position was attacked by Japanese forces. He quickly took cover, but was mortally wounded when a mortar shell landed directly in his foxhole.
