In Memory Of

CPL & CPO John J. Herwer, 71, California Army National Guard, U.S. Navy, born in
Washington March 31, 1920, passed away on April 22, 1991. After the ANG.,
Herwer was a Mineman for over 20 years. Aboard the USS Tern (AM-31) in Pearl
Harbor, he helped rescue sailors from burning waters. Then, on the USS Breese
(DD-122), he swept for mines to protect the Pacific Fleet before helping study
radiation's effect on aquatic ordinance in Operations Ivy and Castle nuclear tests
on the USS Shea (DM-30). Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate! Til Valhalla,
