ARM1 Wilbur A. Mitts, 24, U.S. Navy, born in Missouri April 27, 1920, was killed in action on September 10, 1944. In WWII, Mitts was an Aviation Radioman with Navy Torpedo Squadron 20. While on a pre-invasion airstrike against Japan, his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire and fell into the sea. Mitts was MIA for 76 years until his remains were identified via DNA in 2021 when "Project Recover" pulled the wreckage from the ocean floor off the coast of Palau.
