January 27, 1923 - March 11, 1944

2nd Lt Thomas V. Kelly Jr., 21, U.S. Army Air Corps, born January 27, 1923, was killed in action on March 11, 1944. Kelly was a B-24 Bombardier with 320th Bombardment Squadron, 90th Bombardment Group (Heavy) in WWII. While on a mission to bomb Japanese positions in New Guinea, his aircraft was hit by enemy fire and crashed into Hansa Bay. Nearly 80 years later, the wreckage of the B-24, Heaven Can Wait, was found, and after being identified via DNA, Kelly was laid to rest in his hometown. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart.
