2LT Herman H. Payne, 25, U.S. Army, born in North Carolina May 17, 1941, was killed in action on April 26, 1967. Payne was an Infantry Unit Commander with 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division in the Vietnam War. While on a mission in Long An, he spotted a booby-trapped grenade and shot it to keep it from endangering his men. The explosion sent shrapnel flying in all directions. Payne was struck by one of the fragments and passed away. For his service, he earned a Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Rest easy, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother!
